Profile

Professor Rizwan Ali Naqvi has built an international research career across Pakistan, Sweden and South Korea, connecting fundamental advances in artificial intelligence with practical applications in healthcare, biometrics, driver-assistance systems, image enhancement and visual perception.

Research journey

His journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from COMSATS University Islamabad in 2008. He then pursued a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Karlstad University in Sweden, supported by a Swedish Government Scholarship, and completed the degree in 2011.

After returning to Pakistan, he entered academia as a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Sharif College of Engineering and Technology. In 2012, he joined the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at The Superior College as a Senior Lecturer. These early teaching appointments established a strong foundation in computing and engineering while preparing him for advanced research.

Professor Naqvi moved to South Korea for doctoral research at Dongguk University, where he earned his PhD in Electronics and Electrical Engineering in 2018. He subsequently joined the Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning Laboratory at Gachon University as a Postdoctoral Researcher from 2018 to 2019. This phase strengthened his work in computer vision, intelligent sensing, biometrics and deep-learning-based image analysis.

He is now an Associate Professor in the Department of AI and Robotics at Sejong University in Seoul. His research record reflects sustained collaboration across disciplines and countries, with a growing emphasis on systems that can interpret complex visual and medical data accurately.

Research contribution and impact

Professor Naqvi’s research spans gaze tracking, computer vision, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, biometrics and medical imaging analysis. His recent work includes deep-learning methods for oncological PET and CT image analysis, driver emotion and gaze classification, semantic segmentation of ocular regions, and perceptual image enhancement.

Beyond publishing, he contributes to the wider research community as a reviewer for international journals associated with IEEE, Elsevier, Springer, ACM, Wiley and MDPI. He has also participated in technical and program committees, delivered keynote talks, and contributed to internationally recognised computer-vision challenges and workshops.
